Blenheim Toyota Boar Slaying Super Comp Results 2011

19-Dec-2011

Hooked on Boars magazine recently ran its 2nd annual ‘Blenheim Toyota Boar Slaying Super Comp’, which turned out to be another very successful event. A huge crowd of over 700 people braved the elements - icy cold wind and rain and the threat of sleet - to make the effort to get to the weigh-in. A record breaking 148 boars were weighed in on the Sunday after entrants had been chasing bacon for three days straight from all around the country.

Over 550 entries were received, with the major spot prize for the open division being another flat deck, single cab Toyota Hilux with new Kumo tyres and a Silverline alloy dog box up for grabs. This year’s winner was east coast crayfisherman Ken McLeod who said “I’ll hold on to this truck for a pig hunting wagon alright - and I can’t wait to get out for a hunt in it!”

Nathan Hall weighed in the largest pig in the Open division with a 67.5kg boar. But it was Tamara Porter in the Young Guns division who managed to get the biggest pig overall at a huge 74kg. Coming all the way from Tuatapere, right at the bottom of the South Island, proved worthwhile for Kelly Lee, as her 66.5kg boar sported a very impressive set of tusks, which attracted a huge amount of interest from those gathered at the weigh-in.

The supreme prize in the Young Guns section (hunters aged between 10-16 years) was an impressive Matthew’s Trophy Hunting Safaris stag and pig hunt valued at $3500 sponsored by Waimate-based hunting guide Brendan Matthews. This year’s winner was 12 year old Tom Orr from Ward. HOB editor Matt Willis recently returned from taking Tom, his dad John and hunting mentor Rick Denton on this hunt and are very pleased to announce that Brendan has generously offered to sponsor this prize again next year. This is great news for all Young Guns entrants in 2012.

The junior division was well supported with youngsters of 4-9 years bringing hares, possums and rabbits to be weighed in. Little Jemma Horn had the heaviest possum at 4.8kg, Kara Page had a 3.88kg hare and Lilashqui Pikia won the heaviest rabbit with a 2.36kg model.  Marlborough H & F store owner, Don Hansen, as well as giving away an Ultimate Outdoor package ($500) to the junior division presented another fantastic spot prize of a Rossi .44 magnum pig gun to an ecstatic Ted Neal (featured on the cover of HOB 6) who was shaking so much with excitement that he found it difficult to get his gun license out of his wallet to prove he was able to claim the prize!

Not everyone can be a winner on the day; however the first 50 people to weigh in their pigs received a 10kg bag of Champmax dog biscuits, thanks to NRM and all juniors, who were free to enter, also received a prize pack valued at over $25.

The Woodbourne Tavern owners Richard, Rowan and Stacey ensured that the crowd was warmed with hot meals and drinks, the fire was kept blazing and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. This year, HOB magazine and the Woodbourne Tavern made a donation of $1000 to the Renwick Volunteer Fire Brigade as a ‘thank you’ for the great job they do in the local community.

HOB magazine editor and event organiser, Matt Willis says “Thanks to the great support we receive from our valued major sponsors, we have been able to produce another record breaking event. The sheer success of this event allows us at Hooked on Boars magazine to support many other pig hunting events held throughout New Zealand. We have supported 15 this year alone and this helps to grow our sport and encourage young people and families to participate in a fantastic outdoor pursuit.”

A huge amount of positive feedback has already been received, such as this from Emma Daly on our HOB Facebook page ‘Was an awesome hunt, lost the dogs, could only catch sows but got a possum and a hare for the kids, was a great day at the comp, kids had a blast on bouncy castles, was a really good time, thanks guys for putting on a great event, look forward to seeing you next year!!!!”
